20 Sep Menopause Support Group – All welcome!
We’ve teamed up with local social prescribing service Community Connect to host a Menopause Support Group in St Agnes each month.
The purpose of the group is “to offer mutual support, share experiences and talk about different ways of managing the menopause. A chance to laugh, build resilience and get physically active, as well as share the odd glass of wine.”
Meetings will take place on the second Thursday of every month at 7pm, either in or nearby the pub.
All are welcome and the group is being signposted at GP surgeries and local venues, as well as by nurses and other healthcare professionals working in the community.
Our Landlady Louise Treseder explains: “Depending on the weather and the mood, we might be having a refreshing dip, a stroll on the beach, sharing tea and cake, or sipping wine in a cosy corner of one of the bars. The group will be very much shaped by its members and what feels right in the moment.”
All women experience the menopause, although symptoms vary considerably. The actual menopause usually takes place between the ages of 45 – 55, but the perimenopause often begins much earlier and brings with it challenging symptoms.
Libby Hubby, Community Connect Social Prescriber – St Agnes, said: “Despite the menopause finally being discussed more openly, there’s still stigma around it, leaving some people feeling very isolated. The aim of this group is to get together and share the load.”
She added: “Physical activity has been shown to be extremely beneficial for alleviating some of the effects of the menopause, so that will be an element of what we do. However, if you’re not feeling that energetic don’t be put off – we’re talking some gentle yoga or a walk followed by a glass of wine, not coasteering!”
Louise commented: “Here at The Drifty we love supporting the wider community in various ways and doing something specific for my peer group feels important. Working in hospitality, I’m lucky to be able to chat to many women about their experiences and coping strategies when it comes to the menopause; that’s helped my own journey and I want others to benefit from similar conversations.”
